NHS England launches Public Consultation on PrEP
In the past couple of weeks we’ve seen NHS England lose a High Court battle on whether it is able to provide PrEP, appeal that decision and issue a very decisive statement on PrEP – which fueled much media stigma around HIV, PrEP and those who need it. Well to add another twist to the story NHS England have opened a Public Consultation on PrEP – so that the public can give their thoughts on commissioning it. NICE urges councils to make condoms free to young people and those most at risk
The National Institute for Clinical Excellent (NICE) has said that there were 435,000 Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), including over 6,000 HIV infections, recorded in 2015. Chlamydia has fallen, but whilst chlamydia rates have fallen, rates of Syphilis and gonorrhoea have risen by 76% and 53% respectively between 2012 and 2015. NICE is now urging councils to make condoms available for free to those who need them most including: Young people, men who have sex with men and those who sell sex. Gilead strikes deal with Genmab to develop whole new class of HIV drugs
HIV drug giant Gilead has made a $277m deal to license Genmab’s new bispecific drug technology. This will allow them to develop antibody based treatments that perform two different actions at the same time – such as binding to the CD3 receptor and a HIV protein at the same time. This has the possibility to in the future allow people to take just one treatment, rather than the combinations used at the moment.
