New PrEP interaction checker launches

By April 27, 2026 No Comments

The University of Liverpool, working with the centre for experimental therapeutics, has launched a PrEP drug-drug interactions checker.

Liverpool PrEP Interactions is a free tool that allows people taking PrEP to check for drug interactions that might interfere with the way their PrEP, or their other medications, might work.

This new tool follows on from the hugely successful and popular HIV Interactions Checker and Hepatitis Interactions Checker.

The interactions checker is able to check for any interactions for the most commonly used PrEP medications – including cabotegravir, and tenofovir – as well as a large library of co-medications. Results are displayed with a traffic light system:

Green = OK to take together
Amber = Talk to your PrEP prescriber
Red = Do not take together

Jasmine Martin, Business Development Manager for University of Liverpool, said:

We wanted to make the focus of this new interaction checker the patient, rather than the prescriber. We’re using a simplified three-colour chart with indicators that are easier to understand than before. The checker we’ve launched today is still a work in-progress, but we’re excited to be working on a mobile app version with an interactive chat-bot for users who want extra support.

Doctor Steve Taylor, HIV Service Lead at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital and Medical Director for Saving Lives UK, commented:

It’s great to see another tool that will enable people to manage their medications more easily and confidently, which in turn will help them take control of their health. We really want to thank the whole team, and especially our friend Professor Saye Khoo.
