STIs aren’t easy to diagnose. Many don’t have any symptoms at all. Others share symptoms. So only a doctor can tell you what you have, after a full STI screening at a clinic.

There are common symptoms and signs, however, that might help you keep an eye on your health. If you notice any of these, or are worried for any other reason, just get in touch with your local clinic. Regular testing is a good idea if you are sexually active anyway, so don’t be afraid to book an appointment, walk in to a local clinic or access online testing. Sexual Health services are totally confidential.

Elsewhere on this site we talk in a lot of detail about each type of STI. But a quick list of potential symptoms is below.

Men

  • Discharge from the penis
  • Sore, tender or inflamed penis head
  • Testicle ache or pain

Women

  • Unusual vaginal discharge – a change in texture or colour
  • Bleeding in between periods

  • Pain during sex
  • Anal discharge or itching
  • Feverish, flu-like symptoms with any of the above
