Dr. Bonaventura Clotet received his MD at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 1976 and his PhD in 1981 for his investigations on surrogate markers for connective tissue diseases.

He has been Head of the HIV Unit since 1987, and Director of the Retrovirology Laboratory “irsiCaixa” Foundation, at the Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol, Barcelona, Spain, since 1993.  He is also President of the Foundation “Lluita contra la SIDA”, founded in 1992. Since 2006, he has been co-director of the HIVACAT project for the development of the AIDS vaccine in Spain. Indeed, he is associated professor of Medicine at the Universitat Autonoma of Barcelona (UAB).

Dr. Clotet has been member of the Drug Resistance Mutations Group (IAS-USA) for 10 years until July 2011, and of the Governing Council of the IAS for 8 years, until July 2010. He also participates in the organizing committee and scientific committee of several drug resistance workshops and international AIDS conferences; indeed, he is an active member of the Spanish Expert Commission for the Evaluation of Research projects in the National Programme of Health and national AIDS Programme. Dr. Clotet was co-chair of the Track B for the Barcelona World AIDS meeting 2002.

He has published more than 500 papers in international journals.

He is co-director of the AIDS CYBERJOURNAL and member of the editorial board of AIDS Journal, HIV Medicine, Expert Review of Clinical Immunology, Future HIV therapy and Journal of the International Association of Physician in AIDS Care.

He is a reviewer for AIDS, JAIDS, JID, Antiviral Therapy, HIV Medicine, CID, Lancet, and Drugs.

In October 2010 he was awarded by the Catalan Health Institute for his lifetime scientific career.

In March 2012 he was the co-chair for the 10th European Meeting on HIV & Hepatitis held in Barcelona

In April 2012 he was a co-chair of the 13 International Workshop on Clinical Pharmacology of HIV Therapy held in Barcelona

In May 2012 he organized (together with Charles Boucher, Wei He and Aikichi Iwamotto) the First Asian Conference on treatment of Viral Diseases in Beijing. China

He will be the chair (together with Dr JM Gatell) of the AIDS World Vaccine meeting to be held in
